When you learn to sail with Datchet Watersports, we can offer you a variety of methods to suit you, your individual learning style, your availability and your pocket. Everyone learns at different speeds and in a variety of different ways. This learn to sail package deal is aimed at people who have never sailed before or done very little previously. It consists of RYA (Royal Yachting Association – the governing body) Level 1 Course + 10hrs Hire + RYA Level 2 Course. All courses are certified by the RYA with logbooks and handbooks available for purchase. This combination of formal and informal tuition is extremely effective at developing your skill level and is versatile enough to easily fit in with your personal schedule.
Below is a description of what each course involves:
RYA L1 is an introduction to sailing and will give you a taste of the experiences to come. It provides a foundation on which to build skills and experiences, which will take you to the next level. If you have no water confidence issues you will usually learn in a ‘single hander’ dinghy with a normal group of maximum 6 boats and students to 1 instructor. You will learn everything from how to rig and launch it, sail across the wind through to upwind and downwind sailing and then put it to bed at the end of the session. We will provide you with all specialist personal equipment such as wetsuits, buoyancy aids, and boats. At the end of L1 you will be able to sail around a triangular course competently giving you the confidence you’ll need to participate in the next level.
10Hrs of Hire:
After successfully completing Level 1 it does not mean you are ready to take a L2 course straightaway. You will need to perfect all the skills you learned in L1 so that whilst doing L2, you can concentrate on the new skills being taught. That is why we provide you with 10hrs of hire, which can be used at any time. All you have to do is give us a call when you have some free time and book a boat. On the day, the instructors will help you launch your boat and give you some useful tips. After your sail you simply have to sign your ‘Hire Card’ for how ever many hours you sailed for.
If you come down at the weekends for hire between the hours of 10am – 12pm and 1pm – 3pm there will be an instructor on the water in a teaching boat who will go around everyone giving them useful tips as you sail. He or she can also inform you whether you are ready for Level two.
RYA L2 is a competency standard – It can be described as your ‘Driving Licence of sailing’. It takes you to a level where you can control your boat on the water and go where you want to go, rig it effectively, pick up moorings, safely bring it ashore and de-rig. All in light wind conditions. We run this course in larger ‘crewed’ dinghies. This means that once you have completed your L2 with us you will have experience in sailing (and rigging) 2 different types of dinghy. You can then hire a boat independently without direct supervision. L2 is the basic requirement for you to hire a boat from us and most other RYA schools. It gives you a good grounding on all the basic skills required to go sailing. All these skills are then transferable depending upon which avenue that you wish to take – either more dinghy sailing or even yachting.
All packages that you purchase from Datchet Watersports are valid for up to 12 Months.
