Start of Season Party 2014

On the 5th April we held our annual Datchet Watersports’ Start of Season Party.  With the weather being so great for the beginning of the season so far this year, there was no excuse for not getting out on the water.  On  the day itself, we had some hazy sunshine and a moderate breeze that catered for both the windsurfers and sailors alike – great for all of those getting on to the water for the first time this year.

The afternoon kicked off with some speedy tuition for the beginners; followed by some fun and fiercely competitive races set up by the DWS team.  With competitors racing on a range of kit; from our 9.4 and formula board; to the brand new RRD 122 Fire-Move; to a Topper Xenon! The Racing was certainly a spectacle to behold!  And big congratulations to our worthy winners: Annabel Kingston, Damian Murray and Matt Keeble (even though he was on the formula kit!)

Also, victor of his own special award – in the category of best fancy dress effort to a non-fancy dress party, was Mr Paul ‘the sailor’ Sadler!

After all the exertion of the racing and having pitched their tents, most people were in need of a well earned pint – good job, therefore, that the new caterers were on hand to look after us on into the evening.  Once everyone was settled in the bar and had enjoyed a great burger and chips, we split into teams for the quiz.

Round One – ‘The Watersports Logo’ quiz; and despite the best efforts of ex-chief instructor and self-proclaimed logo expert Rich Comber, the one that caught everyone out was ‘Naish’ so here’s a reminder and a bit of revision for next time!

Next, Round Two – Charlie’s fiendishly tricky (and not always 100% accurate) general knowledge round.  Followed by Round Three, and everybody’s favourite – the ‘Music Intros Round’.  This year the music was split into two categories: ‘classics’ and ‘modern’, and despite queries over what qualified as a classic, it was confirmed that the ‘modern’ songs – including such hits as ‘What Does the Fox Say’ and ‘#Selfie’ – were definitely not classics, unless you have a music taste like Paul’s!

Overall, the day was great fun and started the season as we mean to continue!  We love the social aspect of the centre and look forward to seeing you all at our Thursday evening socials which start on the 1st May at 6pm and continue every Thursday throughout the summer. Fancy dress optional.
